Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism made him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
